Dog’s Dandruff : Causes, Treatment And Prevention

Written by: Anastasia Spevakina
Dog’s dandruff is not just an aesthetic problem. It’s  a threat to the general state of the animal and his health. Dandruff occurs as a result of serious and important deviations in the dog’s health.

If you notice that your dog has dandruff, don’t run to buy a special shampoo to the nearest pet store. What you have to do is to take the dog to a vet, because not always the shampoo can help.

! It is strongly recommended not to wash dogs immediately before going to a veterinary clinic.

Food allergy

Food allergies are one of the most common causes of dog’s dandruff. Dogs usually have an allergy for chicken, wheat grits and oatmeal, fish and seafood, egg yolk, soy, and low-quality and cheap dry food.

If your dog is prone to allergic reactions, the best solution for him is the medicated feed.

Unbalanced diet

-Dandruff and other skin diseases may occur in dogs, which are not prone to any allergic reactions as well. In this case, dandruff can be the result of unbalanced, poor nutrition.

Dull brittle hair, partial baldness, thinness. It all often happens with  homeless animals, dogs in shelters, and those dogs, whose owners do not pay attention to nutrition and health.

Dry skin

-Dandruff can be a reaction to the excessive dryness of the dog’s skin. The reason for this phenomenon is simple – too frequent bathing.  Dog’s skin is protected by sebum, and disturbance of this balance brings dull hair and dandruff as a result.

Wash your dog not more than 2 – 3 times a year. After the walking, just wash his paws or wipe it with a soft damp cloth.

Comb dog’s hair from time to time. It will help your pet to get rid of dead hair and prevent his skin from drying.

Use of unsuitable cleaning products

You can bathe your dog only once a year, but if you use unsuitable cleaning products, he will still have problems with dandruff.

Dogs with a special type of hair (white, long, curly) require a special type of shampoo.

! As a general rule, avoid cosmetics for dogs with a pungent odor and vivid color.

Treatment

It’s easier to avoid the disease than to treat it. But if your dog has already got dandruff, consult a veterinarian to prepare the dog’s treatment. If dandruff is caused by a serious disease, the vet will prescribe special medicine and a balanced diet for the dog . In cases, when dandruff is not caused by diseases, usage of special shampoos is enough.

Prevention of dandruff

  • Proper and balanced nutrition for normal functioning of the dog’s body. More vitamins, less junk food, and no water from the tap, as it can bring bacteria and various diseases.
  • Make regular examinations of your dog in a veterinary clinic.
  • Choose the right shampoo (consult about the shampoo with a vet).
  • Try not to stress dogs.

! Remember! Simple observance of these rules can prevent dogs from facing dandruff and other skin diseases!
